Founded in 2018, ColdSpring Mares was built around a kinder approach to nurse mare care. Our proprietary protocol allows mares to come into milk without being bred, which means there is no need to create an unwanted foal in the process.

Many of our mares are retired broodmares or horses without riding careers. As nurse mares, they are given a meaningful new role while providing orphaned and rejected foals with the care and comfort they need. When their time in the program is over, they retire safely with dignity.

In 2025, ColdSpring transitioned into a nonprofit so we could take that mission even further. Our goal is to make the ethical solution the only solution. With the support of our community, we can make this compassionate model more accessible and continue giving both mares and foals the care they deserve.
